Dat komt doordat verzadiging en lichtheid elkaar in het lichte gebied verdringen. Om lichter te worden moet er wit bij, en wit verdunt de kleur. Een kleur die tegelijk zeer licht en zeer verzadigd is, bestaat als waarneming niet — niet in pigment en niet in het oog.
