About RAL 010 40 53
That the maximum lies precisely here is no coincidence. Saturation needs light in order to be visible and pigment in order to be carried; too dark and too little comes back, too light and too much white plays through. The optimum lies in the mid-dark region, and for red specifically around L* 40.
Compare that with the warm hues: in the yellow region the system runs on to saturation 90. Red does not get there, and that is not a limitation of RAL but of what pigment can do. Anyone looking for a more intense red than this is looking for something that does not exist in an opaque form.
The end value of 53 instead of 55 marks that limit exactly.
