Mid grey on the dark side, light reflectance value of 14.1 per cent. In practice this is the lower limit for large wall surfaces in rooms where people spend longer periods: below it the room becomes noticeably dark and the lighting has to compensate.

For machine building, equipment and structural parts it is different — there this is a widely used level, because dirt and signs of use barely show on it.
This shade is also a usable dark partner in contrast calculations: with an LRV of 14.1 you achieve a difference of thirty points against any colour from about LRV 41 upwards, which corresponds to L* 70 and lighter.
