About RAL 000 65 00
Outdoors the requirements differ from indoors. A surface that stands in wind and weather for years collects deposits, algae and exhaust grime. Too light and the soiling shows; too dark and every scratch in the coating jumps out. The optimum lies around this lightness level, and that explains why public space is so grey: it is the colour that stays acceptable longest without maintenance.
On top of that, grey relates to everything. Street furniture stands in front of changing façades, in changing greenery, against changing skies. A colour with direction clashes somewhere; a neutral grey at this level never does.
Indoors the same shade works as a quiet wall colour where colour elsewhere in the room should take the attention. With one warning: under cool artificial light, light neutral grey quickly tips towards clinical. Warmer light, or a neighbouring hue with chroma 05, prevents that.
