About RAL 000 55 00
Between L* 50 and L* 55 light reflectance rises from 18 to 23 per cent — an increase of almost a quarter, for a difference in lightness that is barely visible on a fan deck sample. That is the perception curve at work: the eye does not convert lightness into reflected light linearly, and the largest jump is right around the middle.
Practical consequence: if you lay two wall proposals side by side on ten-centimetre samples, you see a negligible difference and choose on taste. On a wall of twenty square metres one proposal turns out to give a noticeably lighter room than the other. In daylight calculations and lighting plans this is the range where a small change of colour yields the most.
For large surfaces in offices, schools and care facilities this is therefore a rewarding level: still dark enough for calm, just light enough not to burden the room.
