About RAL 000 45 00
Standardised assessment booths have a neutral grey interior, and that is no coincidence. The eye always judges colour relative to its surroundings; a coloured or overly light background shifts the judgement. A neutral grey with no colour direction of its own is the only background that exerts no influence itself. The professional standard sits slightly lighter than this shade, around L* 72, but the principle holds across the whole mid range: the more neutral the environment, the more reliable the judgement.
That also explains why colour assessment in an ordinary workroom is rarely accurate. A yellow wall, a wooden tabletop or a blue overall shifts perception without the assessor noticing.
In use this shade has a downside that follows from the same principle: it takes on the colour of its surroundings. Next to warm timber it tips towards cool, next to a blue surface towards warm. The colour was right on the sample and wrong in the room — with mid greys that is the most common reason for rejection after installation.
