RAL 000 35 00 — Briquette grey
Medium-dark grey, light reflectance value of 11.5 per cent. This is the level that machine building and the tool industry have been arriving at for a century, and that has nothing to do with aesthetics.

About RAL 000 35 00
A machine gets dirty. Oil, metal dust, fingerprints, wear marks around the controls. On a light surface that shows up as soiling; on a very dark surface it shows as sheen instead, because grease reflects light differently from the matt coating around it. At this lightness level neither happens: dirt disappears into the colour without the surface starting to shine.
Then there is the second reason. An operator has to be able to see buttons, levers and edges. At L* 35 enough light comes back to form shadow, so form stays legible — whereas a darker grey lets that form disappear. It is the balance between not showing dirt and still showing form that makes this level so persistent in industry.
For interiors it means something else: this shade carries a technical connotation. A wall in 000 35 00 reads as a work environment, not as a living space. If you do not want that association, you have to go lighter or add colour.
