That is not a groundless figure of speech. A surface that reflects little light but colours what it does reflect strongly towards red-orange produces the same ratio as the glow of heated material. The eye reads that ratio and attaches warmth to it.
In use that means this shade comes into its own under directed lighting and falls back to dark brown in diffuse light.
