RAL Design System plus — hue 030

That is precisely why this hue matters in construction and renovation. Anyone who has to match a façade element, frame or roof detail to brickwork will almost always search in this range. Dutch brick sits in it across its full breadth, from red hand-moulded brick to brown-red clinker.

On the warm–cool scale 030 sits close to the maximum: it only gets warmer in 040 and 050. And unlike the cooler reds, that warmth works in your favour here — a façade colour that is warmer than its surroundings looks inviting, not intrusive.

This hue has 34 shades, fewer than 010 and 020, and the series begins at L\* 30 instead of 20. That is not arbitrary. In this part of the colour space, very dark, strongly saturated tones are harder to produce with the pigments available. The system shows what is reproducible, not what is theoretically conceivable — a distinction digital colour pickers do not make and which in practice is the difference between a workable and an unworkable specification.

More about hue 030

Saturation reaches up to 60, higher than in 010 and 020. The range gains in intensity what it loses in darkness.

When matching brick, roof tile or weathered paintwork, measuring is wiser than comparing. Weathered masonry is almost never the colour it once was; you would then be comparing a new colour sample with a state that no longer exists. Measure the situation as it is and find the closest shade to that.

Bear in mind, too, that brick has a strong texture. A flat, smooth coat of paint in exactly the same colour still looks different beside masonry, because the surface scatters light differently. When matching, therefore, choose for a close shade rather than for an exact match.
