The RAL K4 consists of loose colour samples in A4 format (21 × 29.7 cm), in satin gloss. You order per colour, so you pay only for what you need. The large format is what sets it apart from a fan deck sample. Colour can only be judged properly on a surface large enough for the eye to settle; on a narrow fan deck leaf, a colour is systematically judged differently than on an A4. RAL Classic holds 216 colours with a four-digit number, arranged in colour groups: the 1000 series for yellow and beige, the 2000 series for orange, through to the 9000 series for white, grey and black. The collection has existed since 1927 and is therefore the oldest and most widely used colour standard. For a binding reference at colour approval, use the primary standard RAL 840-HR (satin gloss) or RAL 841-GL (high gloss).
