RAL E1 is the primary standard of RAL Effect. These are not selection samples but binding references: original paint specimens against which a production batch is checked at colour approval and in quality control. This version holds the solid colours of the collection. The metallics are available separately, because they call for their own way of assessing. RAL Effect holds 490 colours, built up from seventy families of six solid colours and one matching metallic each. The collection appeared in 2007 as the first RAL collection based on water-borne paint systems, free of lead, cadmium and chromates. Unlike RAL Classic and RAL Design, the family is the unit here: the six solid colours and the metallic of one family are tuned to one another, so that parts in different materials read as a single whole.
