The A4 format is meant for assessment, not for leafing through the collection. On a large surface you see what a colour really does: how it responds to the light in the room, and how it sits against the material beside it. On a small sample a colour is consistently judged lighter and less saturated than it is. The RAL Design System plus holds 1,825 colours, arranged in forty hues and built up systematically in the CIELab colour space. Every code reads as hue · lightness · chroma, so related colours can be derived from the code itself. The same range is available in A6 format and as colour chips (RAL D3).
