The format is small, and deliberately so: chips exist to be laid out, shifted and combined, not to judge a single colour at size. If you want to see a colour large, choose the loose colour samples in A6 or A4 format. If you want to assemble a series or a harmony, you work faster with chips. The RAL Design System plus holds 1,825 colours, built up systematically in the CIELab colour space. Every code reads as hue · lightness · chroma — RAL 210 40 30 has hue 210, lightness 40 and chroma 30. Because the system is a grid rather than a collection, you can calculate related colours instead of searching for them.
