RAL Classic — greys (RAL 7000 series)
Thirty-eight colours, RAL 7000 through 7048 — the largest group within RAL Classic and by far the most requested. That is no accident: grey is the colour on which construction and machine building have standardised. Window frames, façade elements, switch cabinets, machine housings and building services nearly all come from this series.
The group runs from very light to almost black, and it is at those extremes that the most frequently confused colours sit. Grey moreover nearly always has an undertone — blue, green or brown — and that undertone decides whether a colour sits well beside a façade or an adjoining element or clashes with it. On paper the difference is small; on ten metres of façade it is unmistakable.
Colours that stand out. RAL 7016 anthracite grey is the best-selling colour in the whole collection: dark grey with a blue undertone, standard for window frames and façade elements. RAL 7021 black grey is the darker neighbour with which 7016 is most often confused. RAL 7035 light grey is the classic colour of switch cabinets and machine housings. RAL 7015 slate grey and RAL 7024 graphite grey are the usual alternatives when 7016 comes out too blue.

Judging grey
Of all the colour groups, grey is the hardest to judge visually, because the eye perceives grey very relatively: the same shade looks cooler beside warm timber and warmer against a blue ground. So never judge grey on its own but always next to the material it will meet, under daylight or standardised light. For a binding comparison, use a primary standard card, not the fan deck.
