RAL Classic — browns (RAL 8000 series)

Twenty colours, RAL 8000 through 8029. An emphatically construction-oriented group: in RAL Classic, brown is applied almost exclusively to façades, joinery, roofing and exterior elements.

RAL 8017 chocolate brown is the most requested, standard for window frames, gutters and façade cladding. RAL 8011 nut brown and RAL 8016 mahogany brown follow natural timber colours and are used where painted work has to meet wood. RAL 8022 black brown is almost black and serves as a warmer substitute for black. RAL 8014 sepia brown and RAL 8019 grey brown are the muted variants for larger surfaces.

Brown is not a hue in its own right but a dark, lightly saturated orange or red. That explains why browns can shift so strongly under different light sources: under warm light the red or yellow base comes forward, while under daylight the same colour reads more neutral. When matching existing brown paintwork, judging under the lighting of the final situation therefore matters more than with most other groups.
